A correction to the Cox and Strack curve for finite resistance of a co
ntact metal on semiconductors was considered. Here we present the calc
ulated resistance vs the inverse radius curve for different resistance
values of the contact metal and for different values of the specific
contact resistivity. For the first time we show that this resistance c
an have a moderate to a large effect on the curve in terms of its valu
es and nature which can be misleading because of the non-parabolic beh
aviour. We also present a set of universal curves for the convergent v
alue of the measured resistance for large dot size as a function of th
e contact parameters-specific contact resistivity, contact metal resis
tance and probe radius. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights rese
