Orthorhombic LaTaO4 was prepared by hydroxide coprecipitation followed
by calcination. The orthorhombic form of LaTaO4 is stable in the temp
erature range from at least 293 to 1470 K and coexists with monoclinic
LaTaO4 below 423 K. The large second-order nonlinear response indicat
es that orthorhombic LaTaO4 has a noncentrosymmetric structure. The sp
ontaneous polarization in orthorhombic LaTaO4, assessed from the secon
d harmonic signal, is P-s similar or equal to 1.6 mu C/cm(2).
