Abstract
Surface composition of PbO-SiO2 glasses containing 30-66.7 mol % PbO w as studied by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy before and after heat t reatment in hydrogen. The compositional changes in the nearsurface reg ion depend on a number of factors: the tendency toward minimization of the surface energy, the character of the Pb-O bond, vaporization of r educed lead, and glass structure.
