Abstract
Styroflex is a new member of BASF's polystyrene product line. Its pred ominant features are: high transparency, toughness, oxygen permeabilit y and good recovery (memory effect). Thus, Styroflex is the ideal raw material for the production of fresh meat packaging film. The best tec hnical solution consists of a 3 layer coextruded thin film made of Sty roflex and polyolefin. Styroflex-based films have superior toughness c ompared to conventional films, eg PVC, resulting in improved processin g characteristics on automatic packaging machines. These properties co uld be reproduced in numerous field tests. Pork, beef and poultry, wra pped in Styroflex displayed the same organoleptics, color and positive microbiological behavior compared to conventional PVC film.
