In an early article considered here, John Dewey introduced many of the
educational ideas that he was to develop more fully in later works. O
ne of the most important is the claim that ''moral education'' refers
to both the conduct of education (a form of education that is morally
defensible) and the product of education (a moral citizenry). After an
appreciative summary of the article, I raise some questions about the
adequacy of Dewey's moral theory.
