Pig production amounts over 60% of the total quantity and value of the
livestock production in Taiwan. So, the utilization of porcine by-pro
ducts from slaughterhouses and meat-packing plants is the most urgent
problem. The majority of porcine by-products, except for blood (which
is made into blood cake or blood powder or discarded as waste), hides
(used for leather tanning or discarded as waste) and lungs (used for f
ish fodder or discarded as waste), are sold fresh and consumed by Taiw
an's inhabitants. Research on porcine by-products is focused on promot
ing the add-in value of porcine blood, hides and lungs.
