A procedure to predict the response of the elastic coupler of a four-b
ar linkage allowing for possible fluctuation in crank speed is present
ed. The response is described by Mathieu-Hill equations obtained by ap
plying Hamilton's principle and method of Kantorovitch. These are solv
ed by the RKM-method of numerical integration. The effect of crank ine
rtia on coupler response is studied. It is concluded that crank speed
fluctuation gives rise to increased strains and hence should be contro
