Dissolution calorimetry (6 N HCl, 323 K) was used to determine the ent
halpy of some reactions involving TBa2Cu4O8 and Y0.5Gd0.5Ba2Cu4O8. Rea
ction with CO2 is found to result in the decomposition of the 124 comp
ounds studied into mixtures containing Y2O3, Gd2O3, CuO, and BaCO3. Bo
th 124 phases are thermodynamically stable with respect to mixtures of
Y2O3, Gd2O3, CuO, and BaCuO2 at room and lower temperatures.
