The propagation modes of ultra-acoustic waves in quartz planar resonat
ors with different elliptical electrodes have been studied by means of
white-beam X-ray topographs. The contrast is explained on the basis o
f thickness vibration modes and the validity and limits of this model
are verified by means of simulation of the Xray images. The shape of t
he fringes is correct but other features are not observed in the simul
ations. The differences may be explained by the interaction with the w
ires connecting the electrodes to the frequency generator and a slight
angle between the upper and lower surfaces not taken into considerati
on in the theory.
