This article reports the findings of a questionnaire investigation int
o some of the educational outcomes of Year-11 deaf pupils in ordinary
schools in England in 1996 and builds on an earlier investigation into
the 1995 outcomes. The survey was able to significantly increase the
return rate from the earlier study. Some of the earlier findings are r
eplicated - in particular, that all the background factors investigate
d account for only 20% of the variance on GCSE examination results. Ho
wever, rule new factors emerge as influencing variables: the age at on
set of deafness and the hearing status of the parents. Degree of heari
ng loss is not one of the most important factors. The discussion consi
ders how different codings of examination success can effect the resul
ts obtained from statistical analysis.
