Single-phase alpha-Ca3N2 is synthesized by solid-state reaction and it
s conductivity is measured between 873 and 1573 K. The composition of
the gaseous environment is found to have a strong effect on the conduc
tivity of calcium nitride. Doping of Ca3N2 with lanthanum nitride redu
ces the total conductivity and increases the ionic transference number
as a result of the decrease in electronic conductivity.
