Jj. Rodwell et al., THE RELATIONSHIPS AMONG WORK-RELATED PERCEPTIONS, EMPLOYEE ATTITUDES,AND EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE - THE INTEGRAL ROLE OF COMMUNICATION, Human resource management, 37(3-4), 1998, pp. 277-293
This article explores the nature of organizational communication in th
e human resource management context. An analysis of survey data collec
ted from employees of an Australian information technology company fou
nd that employee perceptions of teamwork, communication, employee Job
satisfaction, commitment, and stress significantly predicted self-rate
d performance. Unexpectedly, communication was found to be negatively
related to performance. Analysis of the pattern of relationships indic
ates that while the direct relationship between communication and perf
ormance is negative, the role of communication is one of enhancing tea
mwork, job satisfaction, and commitment. The article relates the findi
ngs to the ''communication metamyth'' which assumes that more communic
ation Is necessarily good.
