Abstract
The statistician is playing an increasingly important role as consultant to the legal system, and such service will frequently involve expert testimony.This paper reviews the function and responsibilities of the expert witness, methods of providing testimony, and selected criminal and civil cases which utilized statistical techniques.The concluding section is devoted to ethical considerations.
