Abstract
Multivariate process control procedures based on simultaneous univaria te control charts have been suggested by several authors. These proced ures are very sensitive to the direction of a process shift. We presen t a simple geometrical description of this directional sensitivity and quantify its effect. The advantages of control charts based on the pr incipal components are noted. (C) 1997 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
