Results of a systematic replication of studies by Dearborn and Simon a
nd by Walsh suggest that differences in their conclusions resulted fro
m differences in their experimental procedures, Managers are broader p
erceivers when they are encouraged to identify more problems. Also, co
ntrary to Walsh's and others' theories, in this replication belief str
ucture did not mediate the relationship between functional experience
and selective perception. In addition, predominantly negative relation
ships were found between areas of experience and perceptions, indicati
ng that functional experience may produce selective imperception as we
ll as selective perception.
