The present study investigated whether the broader dimensions of trans
formational and transactional leadership can be inferred from subordin
ate reports of leadership behaviors collected using instruments not sp
ecifically designed for this purpose. The leadership measurement instr
ument used was the Leadership Practices Inventory (LPI). Alternative s
econd-order factor models were evaluated using LISREL 7, and results s
uggested that subordinate assessments made using the LPI also can be u
sed to measure transformational and transactional leadership. This sug
gests that transformational and transactional leadership approaches ma
y be thought of as underlying dimensions, with more particularistic le
adership behaviors, such as those described by the five LPI dimensions
, being related to them.
