Abstract
The central task of this paper is to bring into focus a conception of spiritual development which is not, in essence, religious, and which, therefore, can express the meaning of personal and communal identity w ithin the established climate of the age. Such a conception must accep t cultural diversity, reflect democratic humanism and seek to promote life-chances for children and adults in a world of high stress and rap id change.
