Phase relationships in the HfO2-EU2O3 system were studied over the ent
ire composition range at temperatures between 1400 and 2800 degrees C
by thermal analysis, optical examination, x-ray diffraction, and elect
ron microscopy of melted and annealed samples. This binary system cont
ains regions of solid solutions based on different polymorphs of const
ituent oxides and the pyrochlore phase Eu2Hf2O7, resulting from orderi
ng of the fluorite solid solution.
