Hybridization of the structures of the antioxidant 2,6-bis(1,1-dimethy
lethyl)-4-methylpheno (BHT, 1) and the calcium uptake inhibitors medib
azine (2), lomerizine (3), cinnarizine (4) and flunarizine (5) resulte
d in compounds (6-9) with dual activity. The inhibitory effects of the
parent compounds were retained in lipid peroxidation (induced either
by NADPH or Fe2+) and in veratrine-evoked Ca-45 uptake, but inhibitory
activity was decreased in K+ stimulated Ca-45 uptake.
