The range of multimedia services been introduced by BT is becoming inc
reasingly extensive, especially those using the Internet. New, reliabl
e, low-cost services must generate customer demand and sustain custome
r satisfaction. This article describes a framework for the authoring a
nd distributed handling of content with associated metadata (informati
on required to enable a service to be provided) accompanying an applic
ation. The sue of a specification language to define metadata in conju
nction with the tracking and verification of content and key aspects t
o minimising operational costs. The framework reflects the work being
undertaken by the Digital Audio Visual Council.
