This article explores the cultural differences that have influenced th
e German reunification process. It argues that reunification has been
interpreted differently depending on whether individuals come from the
East or the West. Using Schein's (1992) framework different and criti
cal aspects of the respective cultures are identified. The impact of t
hese cultural forces is illustrated through a case study describing th
e development of the Treuhandanstalt and through metaphors that highli
ght alternative interpretations of reunification. The article conclude
s by discussing the implications of this process for appreciating cult
ural differences in Germany.
