Defects in products such as textile, paper of film are often caused by
defects, dynamic changes or wear of machine elements. On this backgro
und it was the objective of the reported study to investigate the pote
ntial of low-cost optical profilometres for the on-line inspection of
rotating cylindrical bodies. Sensors after the triangulation principle
proved to be powerful for the quantitative characterization of form a
nd surface or rollers, while fibre-optical sensors were advantageous f
or the detection of local defects on the roller surfaces. Based on the
se results a specialized sensor for the industrial inspection of calen
ders was developed.
