Abstract
To strengthen ''the scientific and technological basis of the industry in the community and promote its international competitiveness'' (Art . 130f of the EU Agreement), the European Union gives grants for the d evelopment of innovative techniques, processes and products. These gra nts are given for sectors such as transport and the environment but al so for projects in the brewery industry. In the following it can be se en from examples as to what projects have been previously furthered an d where the emphasis lies in the new programme for research and techno logy Development (Framework Programme). Finally, the initially perhaps tedious and less encouraging way that has to be taken initially until the fund are made available.
